Koa Wood Bowls Made In Hawaii

What should you know about our Koa Bowls?...

These koa wood bowls are custom made exclusively for us. All koa wood bowls are from the Big Island of Hawai`i. Unlike other koa wood products found in many Hawaiian stores, our koa wood bowls are NOT imported. We make our koa wood bowls one at a time, using the best koa wood available. To ensure quality and authenticity, we apply traditional finishing practices to each koa wood bowl. Our koa wood bowls can be used as show pieces, collector's items, or as functional servers. There is no toxic finish (we use mineral oil as a finish for all koa bowls). For quality control purposes, only a few koa wood bowls are produced at a time. Therefore, turn around times for koa bowls may vary if we are out of stock.

Hawaiian Koa (Acacia koa) is a Hawaiian native forest tree unique to Hawai`i. It is a valued hardwood that has become "rare" due to its popularity and limited supply. Our koa wood bowls are made from trees already felled; to protect our ecology we do not harvest live trees for our bowls. A bowl made of this honorable wood will enhance the decor of any room, entry way, or mantel.

Koa Wood Care

How should I care for my wood bowls?

Food handling - Our bowls are finished with mineral oil before shipping. When used with food, bowls may be hand washed with mild soap and water. Dry immediately. Do not let liquid sit in the bowl or leave it soaking in a sink. By applying a thin coat of mineral oil periodically you can extend the life of the wood grain. Never use metal or materials that may scratch the wood surface. Nylon, non-scratch plastic or other wooden utensils are recommended instead.

As an art form - When appreciated as functional art object, use only mineral oil by applying it lightly and letting it sit a few minutes. Wipe off excess. We do not recommend other oils such as vegetable/olive oils as it may cause stickiness or become rancid. If you choose to apply furniture polish, we recommend a light coat of fine furniture paste wax using a soft cloth. Let dry and buff with a clean, soft cloth. Avoid overspraying and other harsh chemical products (e.g. glass cleaner) as it may damage the wood surface permanently.
